Born on October 10, 1980, Maverick Carter spent his formative years in Akron, Ohio and Atlanta, Georgia. He is the son of Katherine Powers, a social worker, and Otis Carter. A lifelong friend of LeBron James, they both played basketball and football during their time at St. Vincent–St. Mary High School (SVSM) in Akron. Upon graduation from SVSM, Carter continued to play basketball at Western Michigan for one season before transferring to the University of Akron where he decided to focus on other pursuits.

Carter took up an internship at Nike, leaving college to become a field representative for the brand. Since 2006, he has been managing business for James. Along with James, Rich Paul and Randy Mims, Carter is a founding member and principal of LRMR, a company dealing in sports-marketing and agents. He was instrumental in creating The Decision, a TV special. Carter brokered a deal between LRMR and Fenway Sports Group, which not only gave James partial ownership of Liverpool F.C., but also increased his international profile. He created The LeBrons series of commercials that featured animated versions of James. Together with James, Carter set up SpringHill Entertainment which collaborates with Warner Bros. on various projects including the Disney XD series Becoming, Starz's Survivor's Remorse series, NBC's game show The Wall, Bleacher Report offshoot Uninterrupted and Space Jam: A New Legacy. In 2021, Carter negotiated a deal leading to him and James becoming part-owners of the Boston Red Sox. In addition to all this, Carter co-produced Black Ice – Hubert Davis's 2022 documentary film – alongside Drake and James.
