Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, was recently released from prison after reaching a plea deal in the YSL racketeering trial, marking this as Georgia’s longest-running criminal trial in history.
When Did Young Thug Go to Jail?
The rapper has been incarcerated since his arrest on May 9, 2022. He was taken into custody on multiple gang-related charges alongside 27 others, including Gunna, as part of a 56-count indictment connected to the YSL record label.
Following his arrest, Young Thug had a bond hearing a month later but was denied bail. Prosecutors portrayed him as the leader of the operation and described him as the “most dangerous” member of the alleged gang, claiming he should not be allowed back on the streets.
Why Was He Arrested?
Young Thug faced jail time due to a 56-count indictment for violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Prosecutors identified him as the leader of YSL—initially referring to his label, Young Stoner Life Records—but also linked it to Young Slime Life, an Atlanta-based gang affiliated with the national Bloods. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis characterized this gang as violent, with a history of crimes dating back to 2012 that included murder, robbery, theft, carjackings, and assaults.
What Happened During the Trial?
After more than a year following his arrest to seat a jury, the YSL RICO trial finally commenced on November 27, 2023. However, it encountered significant hurdles: one co-defendant was stabbed in Fulton County Jail; another witness testified while under the influence; there were changes in judges due to recusal and removal.
A memorable moment occurred at the beginning of the trial when Thug’s attorney Brian Steel offered an alternate interpretation of his client's nickname as “Truly Humble Under God.” He further claimed that “Pushin P” signified “pushing positivity,” asserting that YSL was named after fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent.

What Was His Plea Deal?
On October 31st, Young Thug pleaded guilty to six charges: one count of participating in criminal street gang activity; three counts of violating the Georgia Controlled Substances Act; one count of possessing a firearm during commission of a felony; and one count related to possessing a machine gun.
Judge Paige Reese Whitaker sentenced him to 15 years probation without any prison time. She remarked: “I know you’re talented. If you choose to continue rapping, use your influence to show kids that there are ways out of poverty besides getting involved with powerful figures selling drugs.”
