Craig Melvin Speaks Out After Today Show Security Incident
Today anchor Craig Melvin spoke out after police arrested a "disorderly person" at the morning show's studios inside New York City's 30 Rockefeller Center on July 16.
"Hey everyone. I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours," Melvin wrote on Instagram. "Thanks for reaching out. I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @TodayShow."
He also included a statement from Today, which confirmed that there was "a security incident this morning at the Today show studio."
"An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A," the statement continued. "The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security. The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured."
A spokesperson for the New York Police Department told E! News that a “disorderly person” was arrested inside 30 Rockefeller Center just after 9 a.m. on July 16.
“Officers responded and placed an unidentified individual into custody," according to the NYPD. "The investigation remains ongoing.”
The incident did not hinder the Today broadcast, which continued uninterrupted with aired segments featuring The Odyssey stars Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway, as well as the cast of The Hawk.
During the show, Melvin's co-host Savannah Guthrie announced that she will be taking a temporary hiatus from the news desk to film an upcoming NBC game show based on the popular Wordle puzzle game.
"I’m headed over to shoot Wordle over the next few weeks,” Guthrie, 54, shared during Today’s July 16 broadcast. “We’re going to shoot the whole season, and we’re super excited. Cannot wait for everyone to see it.”
